The Truth About How Long It Takes To Heal

How long does it take to heal?

The answer – of course – is “it depends” and the reason it depends is because:

1 – Toxicity levels are different for everyone.

2 – Some people have a strong(er) constitution and are less sensitive and others get a migraine from just eating more produce, and so we have to take it slower.

What you also should understand is that healing comes in layers and phases.

Phase 1 Healing – the body will heal the most urgent pressing issues.  That may or may not be the symptom or condition you were hoping to get resolved.  But your body has a wisdom and you can’t force it to do things out of order.  Think of healing in phases like a nurse in the ER room, triaging patients for what / who is the most critical.  Your body will do the most urgent things first.  Killing pathogens and “taking out the garbage”, aka detoxing harmful chemicals, are both high priorities for your body and will take precedence over non-life threatening issues.

Phase 2 Healing – deeper healing occurs, and people notice that their vision improves, their liver spots may lighten (these are really rooted in toxicity and it’s why they were called liver spots), hair darkens or there is less grey appearing, stamina improves, and muscle mass starts to  make a rebound.  If we were doing DEXA bone scans, we would start to see improvements in bone mass.

Phase 3 Healing – root causes of illness have now been addressed, repairs have been or are being made to essential tissues (nerves!), and instead of using every single nutrient that comes its way, the body can now start STORING vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fats, ideal sources of glucose, hydration, and phytonutrients etc for a rainy day.

I was thinking about Phase 3 this morning as I watered my garden.   I provide my plants nutrients every couple weeks and they STORE some of those nutrients until the next application.    Phase 3 of healing is when we see the fine lines or dents in fingernails and toe nails disappear.  Those symptoms do indicate an underlying condition, but it’s not life threatening to have dents or ridges in the nail beds and so they aren’t addressed in the first levels of healing.

What also factors in to how long it takes to heal is that we need to be honest about how long you’ve been sick, or have had health issues.    Were you born sick, like me and you have 54 years of disease on some level to reverse?    Did you have acne or ear infections as a child and took antibiotics?  If we are really honest, most of us have had brewing, underlying health conditions for many years and so we have to remember that we didn’t get here overnight and healing will take time.

I was taught at Bastyr University, while doing my graduate work, that as a practitioner, I should plan on one month of healing for each year my patient has been sick.  If you are 50, and had health issues as a child at age 10, that is 40 years of underlying health issues to heal.  Just like it’s unrealistic to lose 100# in 3 months, 6 months or maybe even a year…..it’s unrealistic to heal root causes in a few months .

I feel great these days, but I know that when I look back a year from now, I”ll feel EVEN BETTER!  I expect my receding gums to start growing back.  And my muscle mass to continue to grow!


So, how long does it take to heal when it’s all said and done?  My best generic answer is that it’s about 18 months to 4-5 years.  Of course people have symptoms resolve in this time.  Constipation can resolve in a few weeks.  Energy can improve.  Inflammation can ease up.  But I’m talking about going from chronic and mystery illness to bulletproof!


I know it seems like a long time, but once you get your fire built up nice and strong, a wet log here and there doesn’t do the damage like it did before.

And once you’ve really put a dent in getting rid of toxins, heavy metals, and you learn how to keep the holes in the boat plugged, you’ll reap those health benefits for life!!!

Healing – true healing – is like a part time job for awhile.  But then it becomes a lifestyle.  And for the most part, you just keeping taking two steps forward with an occasional step backward as old layers peel off.

If you would like some specific action steps, here’s a few to get you started:

1 – get a good quality water filter as discussed in the video.  It’s important for your drinking water but also your shower water!!

2 – drink a gallon of high quality filtered or spring water a day and add fresh lemon or lime juice to revitalize the water

3 – start eating AT LEAST 9 servings of fruits, veggies, and leafy greens a day.  I discuss serving sizes in the video.  Raw produce still has it’s hydration in the natural state.  Our bodies are 70% water.  Drink up and eat more fruit, salads, and lightly steamed veggies.

4 – keep it raw and fat free til lunch every day, so that your liver can maximize the work he did overnight for you.  And be sure to drink at least a quart of water when you wake up.  Before you do anything else.  So that you flush out all of the processed toxins from the day before.

5 – get a timer for your router and have it shut off the internet from bedtime until you get up.   For us, it shuts off at 10 PM and comes back on at 6 AM.  Johny gets up before me, and I tend to stay up later than he does but those times work for us.  All those EMF’s suppress your immune system, even while you are sleeping!

6 – movement is critical and what you do will be unique to you and your current level of health but I throw out a few ideas on the video.  Rebounding is ideal and you can learn more here.
