Fat #2 you need in your home: Coconut Oil
Yes, it’s a saturated fat. It is also a Medium Chain Triglyceride and it is primarily used for energy to get you through your day……not fat on your hips or thighs and as such it also DOES NOT turn into fat in your arteries. It is very stable and so does not go rancid over time. A quart sits right on top of our stove, ready to contribute to our health at any given moment. Eggs and veggies sauteed in coconut oil are delicious!
History tells us that coconut oil was prized by traditional cultures…and…they had some of the lowest rates of heart disease in the world. Hint – it’s not the whole, unrefined fats that leave us with an epidemic of heart disease. As a nation, we consume more sugar than is healthy and trans fats hit the market in factory food about the same time that our epidemic began. But that’s another blog post.
Coconut oil nourishes the thyroid gland and so it’s a great addition for those who have hypothyroid.
It is poly-microbial. Big word right? It means coconut oil kills bad guys like viruses, bacteria and fungus. Anyone with Dysbiosis or Candida overgrowth could literally use coconut oil in the “food as medicine” approach.
Dandruff? Rub coconut oil into the scalp, and shampoo out to remedy this fungal infection of the skin.
Use it for frying, baking, mayonnaise, desserts, salad dressings…………….make your own shampoo’s, body washes, lotions, deodorants. Lately I’ve started putting a tablespoon of coconut oil with our dog’s food and mixing it in. He seems to thoroughly enjoy this! I’ve read how it can help him with his dry skin too. (They make coconut oil for dogs…I love my Buddy enough that he too gets the Gold Label. I have no doubt that if I were attacked by a bear in the woods, he’d give his life for me. I don’t mind the few dollars for him.)
I purchase my coconut oil from Tropical Traditions. I purchase the Gold label coconut oil which is still made the old fashioned way (by hand) in the Philippines. Most coconut oils are mass produced by machines and don’t use the best coconuts. Brian and his Filipino nutritionist wife resurrected the old fashioned process and it is still being used today. Hundreds of families work for them and supply the oil for all us. Coconuts are processed within 24 hours after they are cut from the tree. When measured independently, the TT coconut oil supplied twice as many anti-oxidants levels as any other coconut oil on the market. It is the #1 coconut oil sold in the US today. There’s a reason for that.
If you want to know more, there is plenty of information on the Tropical Traditions website.
When I priced a gallon of coconut oil from Tropical Traditions (120 ounces)…it came to $6.25 for 12 ounces. I had been paying more money…..for less product and for inferior mass-produced products. I can honestly say, I won’t go back to factory coconut oil.
At the time of this writing, the Gold Label is 50% off if you buy (2) 32 oz. jars. While you’re there, look around. They have body care products, hundreds of coconut based recipes, soy free chickens and eggs, grass fed beef and bison and more. If you are looking to improve your healthy on almost any level, they have products to support this journey. I dare say, you wont be disappointed.
