It all started with my husband tossing out an offhand remark about “What if you didn’t know what you know….Who would you be”?
What he was getting at is that I tend toward a fragile set of DNA & Mitochondria. But because of what I know as a different kind of dietitian and all of my functional medicine/biochemistry training……. I CHOOSE to make lifestyle choices that support my good health. I manage my DNA and Mitochondria quite well.
But it struck me. What if I didn’t know? What if I was like most of America and I ate my share of fast or processed food? What if I drank my share of alcohol or sugar? What if I was still eating gluten? Or grains? Who would I be if I didn’t know how to feed my mitochondria?! What if I didn’t know how to reduce my toxic burden? What if I didn’t support my liver – the internal garbage truck? I can see myself in a waiting room right now. In my mind, I’m easily one of my patients who just doesn’t know HOW to get from sick to well.
For each of us, it started with an egg and sperm which determined our DNA & genes. Whether we are born male or female, we inherit our mitochondria from our mothers. A mitochondria is the power plant of each cell. It literally produces energy just like a hydro-electric plant makes electricity.
Want to blink your eye? You need energy produced by the mitochondria.
Want to raise your arm? You need energy produced by the mitochondria.
Want to speak? You need energy produced by the mitochondria.
I got my mitochondria from my mom and she has Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia, in my training, is largely a mitochondrial issue. Thus, I inherited a risk but it’s not my fate. I need to support my mitochondria or I could easily be her.
This is key: If our mitochondria don’t have the vitamins and minerals they need, or if they are bathed in a toxic burden, they can’t make us energy and we can no longer function optimally. You know how you feel without enough sleep right? How do you feel when you are traveling and eating too much restaurant food? How about a night in a smoky bar?
Trying being a mitochondria and your job is to make energy – to keep your person alive and well – but you don’t have the right raw materials (vitamins, minerals, co-factors like CoQ10, and Lipoic acid).
Trying being a mitochondria and you are bathed in cigarette smoke, preservatives in canned/boxed/frozen food (even if it is from the “health food store”), chlorinated tap water, a variety of “natural” as well as man-made sugars, artificial colors & sweeteners, MSG hidden in more foods than you know about, charred foods, wine & beer, oxidized foods as a result of over-browning……….toxins like BPA in just about anything plastic or canned, mercury in the air supply, arsenic in the water supply, pharmaceutical drugs in the water supply, pesticide residues on our food, flame retardants in our mattresses and sofa’s.
If the shoe doesn’t fit yet, lets not forget about those endotoxins? The ones made INSIDE you as a result of imbalanced bacteria, yeast overgrowth, parasites, H Pylori, mediators released as a result of food allergies & sensitivities…….
Think about being YOUR mitochondria for the day! What are YOU doing to support or poison YOUR mitochondria?
It is for this very reason that I did a free call on Monday, July 15th to discuss how toxic our world is. Those external and internal toxins hinder our mitochondria’s ability to function. They damage DNA. They alter enzymes which alters function. Why the free call? Because if we know better, we can do better.
I know better. And I do better. I make very specific choices at the grocery store. I choose to spend money on supplements that support the DNA I inherited, support my mitochondria power plants, and provide my body the nutrients it needs to detoxify on a daily basis. I get the sleep I need to allow my body to do the detoxification work. I know what to do.
You can too! When you know better, you can do better.
Your health is waiting for you to take the time to invest in yourself. I’ll keep saying it until you get it. If you know better, you can do better. Maybe you feel pretty good today so it’s easy to put it off. “Chronic” disease means it took time. It sneaks up on you. “One day” you realize you aren’t as spunky as you used to be. You’ve forgotten what it feels like to feel great, not just get by. Your health is waiting. I can promise you, none of my patients saw their future coming and neither will you. The critical mass hits and party time is over.
