Gastrointestinal diseases are near and dear to my heart, both as an RD and personally. I remember drinking beer as a young person and having GI issues but I was too young to know any different. I remember getting in an auto accident as a 21 year old and being prescribed a plethora of anti-inflammatory drugs now known to damage the GI tract. I know that my health has always been precarious…and now I know enough to know that not being breastfed….and…being given pablum (a wheat powder) in my formula were a trigger waiting to be pulled. Drugs that increase intestinal permeability, a stressful event, an chronic stress, a diet full of gluten, …many things add to a smoldering fire.
Not many folks escape this life without having a GI issue, OR, a downstream effect of a GI issue. Let me give a few examples. You have migraine headaches but maybe didn’t know that 98% of them are food related, via a type 4 hypersensitivity immune reaction. Type 4 reactions can be delayed up to 96 hours…cause and effect is nearly impossible without the right kind of test. You get hives or skin rashes. Your nails are brittle. You have fatigue but ‘nothing is wrong with you’. You’re depressed ‘for no good reason’. You have asthma or an auto-immune disease like Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis but never suspected that food might be involved in any of these. Unless you see a functional medicine or natural medicine provider, no one has ever talked to you about the link between these.
