7 Reasons YOU Should Take Care of Your Liver!

    4 things cause chronic disease:

    1. Diet
    2. Pathogens
    3. Toxins
    4. Stress

That’s it.  Granted, each category is vast.  But when you boil it all down, at the end of the day, there’s nothing else we can blame it on.

We can’t even blame genetics because what we do on a daily basis has a bigger effect than just carrying the gene.  Meaning, you can carry the gene for breast cancer.  But overwhelmingly, the risk is more associated with lifestyle factors.  Things like diet, pathogen burden, toxin burden, the amount of sleep you get, stress and if/how you manage it, etc.   And don’t forget that most of the women diagnosed with breast cancer DON’T carry the gene!

These 4 root causes of chronic disease ALL have a relationship with your liver.  With the amount of toxins, viruses and bacteria we are exposed to, along with unhealthy diets and lifestyles, our livers are overburdened.  And read on to find out how stress affects ALL your organs!

Even if you’ve never been diagnosed with NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) or elevated liver enzymes, I promise you that your liver would be thankful if you gave him a little loving.

7 Reasons You Should Take Care Of Your Liver!

    1. Our liver plays a MAJOR role in weight management.  If you are having trouble losing weight – no matter what diet you try – it would behoove you to love on your liver a little.  (Say that 3 times fast!!!)
    2. Our liver holds glucose reserves.  You know, like when you’re at the lake and you didn’t bring enough snacks for the day.  Your liver stores glucose and releases them if/when your blood sugar drops.  In fact, this is not mainstream yet, but type 2 diabetes has everything to do with your liver being overburdened.  Pathogens play a role here.
      1. Because our liver regulates blood glucose, there is also a downstream effect to sleep.  If you are sleeping away, and your blood sugar drops, your body will secrete adrenaline and other stress hormones to wake you up.  The stress hormones alone will raise blood sugar, but they’ll also wake you up!
    3. Our liver biotransforms toxins.  We eat food sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and rodenticides.  We can’t not.  Not every food is available 100% organic, and even then, toxins fall out of the sky.  Yea, I know, it sounds crazy but planes and cars all emit exhaust and it gets in the air right?  So if you aren’t actively thinking about your liver and how to support it, envision it like a  like a dirty fish tank. Yuk. But true.
    4. Our liver plays an enormous role in digestion.  It produces bile which helps us break down fat.  If we don’t make enough hydrochloric acid (HCl), our livers produce more bile since they are a team player.
    5. Our liver stores vitamins.  If you have had any type of nutrient testing done (Vitamin D, B12, SpectraCell Micronutrient, Genova Diagnostics NutraEval, etc) and your provider says you are not getting enough vitamins & minerals, look to your liver.  Think of it like a sponge.  It only has so much storage.  If its full of fat, toxins, pathogens……it can’t also hold enough glucose and nutrients.
    6. Our liver also has its own immune system & protects us against bugs, pathogens, toxins.
If you are stressed, you are secreting adrenaline.  This affects everything, especially our immune system. and over time, or even quite quickly, can make the body very ill. So stress can help make us sick, but really it’s the adrenaline doing it.  Virus’s like Epstein Barr, CMV, and others also have learned to use adrenaline as fuel.
    7. Our liver plays a role in hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.  Our hearts pull blood from the liver.  If the liver is full of gunk – for lack of a better word – its like drinking a milkshake with a straw.  There are filters that try to protect against this, but there’s always a tipping point when it’s just too much.
